Now, On To Music For Your Soul...

"Shake my left hand man, it's closer to my heart."

Guitarist Jimi Hendrix to Guitarist Robert Fripp

Music has ALWAYS been my passion since I was a little girl.  It has always been a huge LOVE of mine and also a tremendously great creative tool for me.  I was born into a musical family with brothers, nieces and nephews who became and still are very highly acclaimed in the Chicago Music Scene.

I traveled from Chicago to Los Angeles, in 1990, in large part to study to be a Record Producer.  Although I have always aspired to sing and front my own band, I was always more drawn to the record production aspect of the music industry.  It was like part of me wanted to be on stage, but a bigger part of me wanted to be behind the scenes helping to birth new music and talented artists into being.

I truly believe that Music is a very critical key to human upliftment, advancement and happiness.  During the very long, and sometimes tedious, time that I spent researching, designing, writing, and creating this website....Music was my partner in crime!  I had my headphones on constantly.

I have found that Music can be a very effective creative tool and I created this web page to encourage you to utilize this wonderful tool in your own creative endeavors and visioning.   If you take my advice, I promise you won't be disappointed!   Peace!

More About My Talented Musical Family...

As I stated above, music has ALWAYS been my passion and one of the many reasons why I moved to Southern California in 1990 was to pursue a career in the Music Industry.  I wanted to sing and produce my own music, in addition to producing others.  Very soon after moving here, I began attending a popular Recording Arts School in Hollywood, studying Music Production.

A few years later, I attended UCLA classes in Music Publishing, A & R,  Record Production, Music Industry Contracts, Songwriting, etc.  In fact, one of my Instructors in my A & R class at UCLA was "American Idol" Judge Randy Jackson.

But, I have only recently figured out that one of the multiple reasons why it was so easy for me to leave Chicago in 1990, is because I was so intimidated by the immense talent of my Musical Family.  My two older brothers Edward and Stevie Robinson were virtual Icons on the Chicago Music Scene back in the day.   My oldest brother Edward, was known by EVERYONE on the South Side of Chicago and he was a larger than life figure.

We, his family, called him Edward, but to the rest of the world he was "Stony."  Edward was a musical genius and talent and he was well on his way to becoming a huge music AND movie star when he died suddenly of an undetected blood disorder/disease at only 27 years old.  Just a few months before Edward died, he had starred in his first movie.  Here is a blurb I found about the movie online:

Stony Island (1978)

Directed by Andrew Davis
This independent project was originally released as My Main Man From Stony Island. Filmed in Chicago, the story involves a group of multiracial rhythm-and-blues performers, and how they're affected by the death of veteran blues musician (Gene Barge). As a bonus, the films takes excellent photographic advantage of the Windy City. Stony Island proved an auspicious directorial debut for cinematographer Andrew Davis, who went back behind cameras for a series of action films, then returned to directing for another brilliant Chicago-based opus, The Fugitive (93). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
I still remember when my brother Edward came home and casually told us that he was going to be in a movie.  We just laughed at him and thought he was just kidding around. You know how little brothers and sisters are.  I don't think we really believed it until we went to the Movie Premiere, which was a HUGE deal in Chicago at that time.  Edward's face was the first and only face in the opening scene...and he was in almost every single scene in the movie afterwards.  And he could actually act!  We couldn't believe it!  He had never taken acting lessons...nor shown any interest whatsoever in acting before!

How Edward's starring in the movie came about is that he was good friends with the Movie Director's, brother, Richie Davis.  Richie was a guitarist and they played together in a very popular band in Chicago.

The movie, Stony Island, (not named after my brother, but a very popular street on Chicago's South Side), was an R & B Musical/Drama, which in addition to my brother Edward, also starred Richie Davis, and now known celebrities, Susanna Hoff, lead singer of the popular all girl group from the 90s, The Bangles, (her Mom, Tamar Hoffs was the Movie's Producer and also co-wrote the film with Andrew Davis), Comedian Tommy Chong's daughter and popular 80s character actress Rae Dawn Chong, and NYPD Blues Star Dennis Franz.

This was the FIRST movie role for everyone involved!  So many people got their "big break" via the movie, Stony Island.  The film was shot by a Cinematographer who is now an Oscar Winning Cinematographer, Tak Fujimoto.

The soundtrack featured both of my brothers, Edward "Stony" Robinson and my other musical genius brother, Stevie Robinson, and also featured Patrice Rushen, Andy Newmark, Gene Barge, Hiram Bullock...who were all 70s funk legends.  Saxophonist David Sanborn scored the Stony Island soundtrack.  Here is a link to an image of the Stony Island album cover and commentary on the soundtrack which I found online:

http://tinyurl.com/alnygb

And last, but not least, the movie's director is now a big time Hollywood Director, his most successful movie being the 7 Time Oscar - Nominated Film, "The Fugitive", which starred Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones.  Tommy Lee went on to win an Oscar for his role in the film.

"The Fugitive is pure filmmaking on a Master Scale."

Legendary Film Critic Roger Ebert

I was very happy when I recently found this quote from Director Andrew Davis in regard to the movie Stony Island, which has never been released on video or DVD:

"It's my first movie and I want to get it out on DVD.  People will get a chance to see a real interesting view of growing up in Chicago."

Director Andrew Davis

Interestingly, in May of 2007, they had a rare screening of "Stony Island" at the University of Chicago which was sold out weeks in advance.  I immediately wondered if Barack and Michelle Obama had attended the screening because the University of Chicago is not only just a few blocks from their Chicago home, but they both formerly worked at the University of Chicago.  The presidential campaign may have kept them just a tad bit too busy to attend.

The entire city of Chicago, (the South Side in particular), was on a euphoric high with the release of the movie in 1978. Stony Island had a lot of great buzz, was screened at Sundance and Deauville Film Festivals and was a winner at the Chicago Film Festival.  My brother Edward, (better known as "Stony"), received excellent reviews for his role in the film and he was tagged as an up and coming name to watch.  Then he died suddenly just a few months later at only 27 years old.  I was 12 years old at the time.

In looking back at that painful time, what I remember most is that it was really difficult because I could not mourn for my brother's death in private.  Everyone in my neighborhood and school knew Stony.  Me and my siblings at school had become "celebrities" at school because our brother starred in a movie.

That was not a typical thing in Chicago, particularly back in the late seventies.  I think that was the most difficult aspect of my brother's death for me because it forced me to stuff my feelings to pretend like I was okay.

It took many years later for me to really deal with my brother Edward's  sudden death.  Ironically, it was the death of another older brother, my brother Ricky who died of pancreatic cancer and whom I was very close to, which forced me to finally deal with it.  Ricky died of cancer at only 44 years old.

That death too was "sudden" for us because Ricky did not tell anyone he had cancer.  He was very close to my Mom, who had been almost destroyed by the death of Edward years earlier, and he could not bring himself to tell her.  He did not want to tell us, his brothers and sisters, to prevent us from shouldering the burden of having that awful knowledge.

Looking back, I think that it was the death of my two older brothers, both at such a young age and with so much promise unfulfilled, which is what fueled my interest in and research of nutrition.  I was "curious" as to why we get sick and get diseases, and could we do anything to prevent it.

I am very happy that I can pay tribute to both my late brothers Edward and Ricky here, and know that their deaths were a strong part of me making Optimum Nutrition such a major focus of this website.  Thank you Edward.  Thank you Ricky.  You both are still benefiting many, even in death.  Your spirits live on. I love and miss you both!  Peace Be Still!

Fortunately, I do have one older brother remaining who shows no signs of dying anytime soon.  My brother Stevie was also a part of the "Stony Island" soundtrack and also was a giant on the Chicago Music Scene.  Remember I mentioned director Andrew Davis's brother Richie, the guitarist, who was good friends with my brother Edward?

Well, Richie and Stevie became best friends after Edward's untimely death and they began to "rule" the Chicago Music Scene together.  Their first and most popular Music collaboration was a band named "Maxx Traxx".

Maxx Traxx was THE premier R & B Funk Band in Chicago in the late seventies to early eighties. They totally ruled!  All of their shows were sold out and they had a HUGE following.

Their songs were very positive, empowering and uplifting and were written mostly by my brother Stevie.  I think that the reason for our mutual positivity was based on the upbringing that we both shared in being steeped in the "no limits", you can achieve anything philosophy of our parent's rearing.  It's how we were raised.

For this reason, it will be SO totally obvious from the lyrics of the following song that we are brother and sister!  I was luckily able to find a few rare songs on youtube from Maxx Traxx which I would like to now feature on this Music focused web page.

The song featured is called "Reach For It" and here first are the songs lyrics, written by my older brother Stevie, back in the late seventies. I think you will find that these lyrics are timeless, and align PERFECTLY with this website's overall message.  Check this out:

Reach For It - by the Chicago R & B/Funk Music Group "Maxx Traxx" - Lyrics written by Stevie Robinson:

Intro/Rap: We believe that if there's anything you want in this life, you've got to Reach for it...can I get a RIGHT ON!

You see, everything worth having surely must have it's price, but you've got to Reach for it!

When you get out there and fall on your face...Get Up!  Stay on the case!  Reach for it!

It's all in YOU, whatever you want to do, just take the time and open up your mind.  Reach for it!

Here we go!

No one said the road you ever chose...would be all...pretty red roses.  And life has no Guarantees with you...just what's ahead, no one ever knows.

Just keep your mind on what you want to do...and if it's TRUE, you cannot lose!

Harness all the strength you have within, and you will win, strike your own fuse.

All you gotta do...is...Reach for it!

Doesn't matter what it is you want from life, just....Reach for it!

Anything worth having surely has it's price, just...Reach for it!

Keep your optimism high and you'll look straight ahead just...Reach for it!

Plan your course and take your time or be mislead...don't be mislead!

Verse 2

Now what you've got inside potentially...it could be...all that you need!

Your incentive can provide the KEY...for you to Be...what you want to be.

Just know the difference between what is REAL...and all that is...simply Fantasy!

All the things you want are there IN YOU...for you to USE...very wisely!

All you gotta do is...Reach for it!

Don't you let ANYONE turn you around just...Reach for it!

When you fall...get back on your feet, don't you stay down!

Just...Reach for it!

What you truly reap is truly what you sow, just...Reach for it!

If you don't take CHANCES then you will never KNOW...just what life has in store.

It's your world...and your world's worth fighting for!

Even though you "think" that you can't take it...

In your MIND...say that you can Make It!

Here is a link on you tube to ALMOST the whole song...sorry that it cuts off at almost the end...but it is worth it!  My brother Stevie is doing all the lead vocals and the intro/rap.  There is a montage of photos that accompanies the song and Stevie is the guy predominantly singing with the mike and occasionally with a guitar.  The white guy on guitar is Richie Davis, who is the nicest and most down to earth guy. Check it out here:

http://tinyurl.com/cu6zzu

Cool huh?  Again, sorry for the cut off!

Maxx Traxx was a very unusual band in the late seventies - early eighties, (particularly in Chicago), because they were a multi-racial band and drew a multi racial audience to their shows.  They were trailblazers in a sense back then...uniting people via the Power of Music!

Here is a link to another cool Maxx Traxx song called "Don't Touch It."  It's the WHOLE song and just in case you could not figure out which one was my brother, Stevie, he is in the red shirt on the album cover. My favorite line in this song is "For Everyday You Give...You Live...Don't Touch It!"  Here it is:

http://tinyurl.com/caa2np

Stevie is still a well-known singer/songwriter/musician in Chicago and performs and tours regularly.  He has done a great deal of work in the Chicago Commercial Jingle Market, becoming one of it's top artists.

He has performed for many distinguished dignitaries, his favorite being meeting and performing for the Late Princess Diana when she visited Chicago.  According to Stevie, she was just as beautiful, both outside and inside, as she appeared to be in photos.

But now Stevie's children are getting much of the attention, in the entertainment world and have been for many years now.  The latest is my niece Rachel Robinson.  Rachel is 22 years old, the same age as my daughter Heather.

As a matter of fact, towards the end of my pregnancy with Heather, I lived with Stevie and his family, and my sister in law Robin was pregnant too.  We both had our babies within two to three weeks of each other.

My daughter Heather graduated from Smith College in North Hampton Mass. in 2007 and is now studying for her Master's Degree.  Heather graduated high school at 16 years old, so she went to College two years early.

By the way, Heather's passion in life is Education and her life's mission is to "revolutionize" the school system in this country.  She is already on track to open her first in a long line of innovative Charter Schools within the next couple of years, while studying for her Ph.D.  Did I mention that my daughter Heather is only 22 years old?

Since I am about to tout the achievements of my nieces and nephews, let me first be a good mother and tout one of the many achievements of my oldest daughter Heather.  Heather submitted the following proposal to the Women As Global Leaders Conference, which took place in Dubai last year:

Proposal For Women as Global Leaders Conference In Dubai March 2008

Author: Heather Jones

Title: Bringing Our Hearts to Our Heads: Education for a New World

Abstract: As our world undergoes rapid change, global leaders must re-evaluate formal education.  During the 21st century, we are witnessing a huge movement of globalization.  This mass movement connects us on a global scale whether we are in Holland, South Africa, China, or the U.S.  It is more apparent then ever before that a peaceful and successful world is contingent on the fostering of citizens who have a common understanding for one another on a global scale.  Despite the massive changes in the world, one thing still remains constant: Education. Education is still one of the most influential social systems in the world. The question is: Will we be able to transform our educational institutions into places of personal unfoldment and global understanding, or will we continue to use our educational systems as places to foster global apathy along with an allegiance to the status quo? We must re-define what it means to be educated. In preparation for the shift in world consciousness, we must bring our hearts to our heads. This is not merely an idealist statement for the idea is pragmatic at it's core. Statistics show that our current systems of education are failing and so another path must be forged. In place of academic apathy, there must be informed compassion. Realization must take the place of memorization. Expertise must be replaced with Service. Questions that are explored in this paper include: How do our current educational systems foster leadership development? What paradigms must be shifted in order to re-define education? Moreover, how can we start building a global education system that surpasses factors such as economic class, gender, and race? My paper offers an alternative form of education by presenting a proposal for a school that seeks to allow students to reclaim their power and to operate as global leaders in-training.

Heather Jones

It is SO obvious that she is my daughter, isn't it?

Here is the response that Heather received in regard to her proposal:

Heather was one of tens of thousands of female college students from all over the world who submitted proposals to participate in this prestigeous annual conference. Needless to say, I am one proud mom!

My niece Rachel will be graduating from Howard University in Washington, DC this year.  She is studying Music and is already an accomplished singer, songwriter, vocal arranger and Music Producer.

She has performed individually with Marvin Hamlisch, Wynton Marsalis, Shirley Caeser and she has already toured England, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy, Slovakia and Switzerland on a professional level with her Mom, Robin Robinson, who is also a well known and very talented singer in Chicago.  Did I mention that Rachel is only 22 years old?

By the way, Rachel, Heather and I are all Capricorns, which if you know anything about astrology, explains a lot!

While attending Howard University, Rachel is the Assistant Director of the Howard University Gospel Choir and the Chorus Instructor for the Howard University Middle School.

Here is an awesome link to Rachel directing the Howard University Choir at the prestigeous Georgetown University in Washington DC.

As you will soon hear, (from all the joyous shouts and yells in the background),  the Howard Choir brought the house down at this famous University which boasts such distinguished alumni as Former President Bill Clinton and King Abdullah of Jordan.

The song is the Howard University Choir's version of "God Is An Awesome God," and this version of the song was arranged by Rachel...and the choir was also choreographed by Rachel.  Check out Rachel here:

http://tinyurl.com/bzetph

I was surprised at how loud, clear and strong they sounded...I counted no more than 30 choir members!  The Howard University Choir just performed at the Obama Inauguration, but I am hoping that Rachel is able to direct the choir for the President at the White House before she graduates before the summer this year.

I know that the Howard University Choir will eventually perform for President Obama at the White House, and since Rachel is from Chicago, like Obama, it would be such an honor for her.  Keep your fingers crossed!

Rachel is already working on an Album/CD to be released soon, and here are two songs from it which she wrote, produced and arranged....and also did ALL the vocals, including background!  To give you an idea of Rachel's immense talent outside of gospel music, check out the following two links:

1) http://tinyurl.com/cap46p

2) http://tinyurl.com/blsvup

Remember that name....Rachel Robinson!  You heard her here first!

Not to play favorites...ALL Of Stevie's kids, aka my nieces and nephews, are immensely talented!  I have chosen these examples to show you:

My nephew Isaiah Robinson was prominently featured in the big budget movie about Peter Pan called "Hook" when he was only 5 years old.  Isaiah actually worked personally with Director Steven Spielberg, and the stars, Robin Williams, Julia Roberts and Dustin Hoffman on "Hook."

Isaiah was one of the "Lost Boys" but his character, whose name was "Pockets", was pivotal because Pockets was the Lost Boy who finally confirmed that Robin Williams aka Peter Pan really was Peter Pan.  Check Isaiah out here:

http://tinyurl.com/clturb

My nephew Joel Robinson was featured in a key scene in the Oscar nominated film directed by Andrew Davis, "The Fugitive."  Andrew Davis has remained close to my family in Chicago thru all these years, and whenever he films in Chicago, which is quite a bit, he tries to use members of my family in his films.

"Though nowadays he enjoys international renown as an "A-Lister" of action flicks, (he prefers to call them "political action" flicks), set in locales all over the country and the world over, Chicagoans most appreciate Davis for his unflagging hometown loyalty.  If he can shoot here, he does."

Chicago Sun Times

"Davis does Chicago locations better than anyone alive."

Film Critic Roger Ebert

Here is my nephew Joel, at about 13 or 14 years old, in a scene with Harrison Ford, in the movie "The Fugitive."

http://tinyurl.com/aqacdb

Joel is also a really talented and fabulous singer and songwriter. As matter of fact, he was signed to a record deal with Sony Music's label when he was only 15 years old.  The head of Sony Music, Tony Mottola signed him personally.

Stevie's second oldest son Christian Robinson is a very accomplished and well known Music Producer, Writer and Arranger in Chicago.  He has worked with the best of the best, but my personal favorite project by Chris was done when he was only about 16 or 17 years old.

Following in his Dad's "commercial jingles" footsteps, Chris wrote,  arranged and even sung on this famous ad campaign/commercial featuring one of Chicago's and the Nation's most favorite sports figures at that time.  Check it out here:

http://tinyurl.com/32jsox

And Stevie's oldest son, Stevie Jr., is also a very accomplished Music Producer and Performer on the  Chicago Music Scene.  He also has many credits in the commercial jingles industry in Chicago and fronts his own band called "The Steve Butler Movement."

Here is something that Stevie Jr. did in February of 2008 based on the inspiration of then Senator Obama's presidential campaign.  This is a song written, arranged and produced by Steve Jr., from his recent album "Something for the People" and the song is called "Change." Check it out here:

http://tinyurl.com/bu7njg

Although Stevie's oldest daughter, Noami Robinson, is also an excellent singer with a great music portfolio behind her, she decided her "business oriented mindset" was more important for her to engage right now, and after graduating Spellman College and Law School, she is now working as an Entertainment Attorney in Louisiana.

Plus, Stevie and Robin also have two younger children, Matthew and Leah Robinson who are also very multi talented musicians in their own right, and as soon as I find video to feature them, I will add them to this web page.  Everyone, with the exception of Noami in Lousiana and Rachel, temporarily in Washington, DC attending college, resides in Chicago.

"Without music, life would be a mistake."

Nietzche

Interestingly, it seems that most members of my family have really good business minds and are entrepreneurially inclined, but we were also born with musical talent.  And we have had to choose between which we were going to focus on...music or business.  There also is a lot of acting talent in my family, as my late brother Edward first displayed.

My mom had the same dilemma.  She is an excellent business woman having created and owned multiple businesses thru out her life...but she also is an excellent singer and would sing and play the piano almost daily in our home.  She also dreamed of one day singing professionally, but she loved business equally.

My daughter Heather had brief difficulty choosing between going to college to pursue her Education Vision and going to school to learn Record Production, which she also loves and knows that she would excel at.  My niece Noami had the same dilemma, in choosing between Music and Law School.  My brother Stevie is now engaged in both Music and his own Business Enterprise.

I tend to believe that we ALL come into this world with multiple talents which are all meant to be utilized, but every talent has it's season.  I told my daughter Heather that there is no reason why she can't do BOTH, but to just choose which one she wanted to do first.  She chose to begin with her Education dream, knowing that her Music dream would materialize in the future.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are ALL born with many talents.  We are gifted these talents for a reason and it is up to us to know this, choose accordingly in the moment, knowing that all of our talents will be utilized eventually.  The main thing is to just begin utilizing at least one.  That's your heart calling you!

I hope you enjoyed my family's music and film clips and my commentary on them!

Peace!

Pam

Pathways To The Soul - Music Is The Magic Of Life

By Enoch Tan

They say that eyes are the windows of the soul. And the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Well, I would say that hearing is the doorway to the emotions.

The sweet smelling scent of another can cause attraction and desire. And a gentle touch from someone special can make everything in the world feel alright. All five senses are equal pathways in reaching the soul.

All your fives senses have the power to change your emotional states. But if you were to ask me which is the single sense that has the power to change the way you feel more deeply, more completely and more quickly that the rest, I would say it is the sense of hearing.

With ears, you’re able to hearing the soothing voice of someone special and the comforting words of a caring friend. But the most powerful thing of all is… music!

Music has the ability to move people in ways like nothing else in the universe can. Hearing a song that you like can change your emotional state instantly or very quickly. It’s like one moment you’re feeling this way and the next moment, you’re feeling very different.

Music alters the meaning of your experience radically. It adds more meaning, emotion and depth to life. You can’t imagine having the same quality of certain experiences like games or movies without the music or soundtrack. You can’t imagine the thrill of a high speed race without the high-energy soundtrack that carries you along at light speed. You can’t imagine the romantic, deeply touching and surreal feeling present in a love movie without the beautiful song that plays in the scenes that so completely sweeps you away into another world…

When you’re so completely immersed in the music or song that you’re listening to, you feel that you’re in another dimension. Life seems much more meaningful in the moment you’re experiencing. But when the music stops, you feel as if the magic that was there all along has just been whisked away. You want it to continue, you want something else to continue taking you on the magical ride that makes life so meaningful to live.

What is it that is so special about music that makes it what it is that nothing else that exist can ever replace what in does in our very souls? Music is the combination of different sounds, frequencies and aural effects playing together with a certain beat, rhythm and harmony that changes from moment to moment. Although you can enjoy listening to the individual sound effects, the magical thing about music is the way it sounds as a whole. The different sounds synchronizing with one another makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Music gives you energy in doing what you do. When you’re in tune with the music, your whole body just feels like gyrating along with the beat, the rhythm and the flow of the song. It’s an incredible experience. Sometimes you just feel like dancing. Life becomes a dance.

Dancing is moving your body with the magic of the music!

It would be terrible if one lost the sense of hearing. Life would be incredibly boring without music. Music is the magic of life! Music that is so pure causes you to have only the most beautiful thoughts, feelings and memories that it conjures up with it in the moment and dispels everything else. Music adds meaning, emotion and depth to words. Nothing else can replace music in it’s expression of meaning. Thank God for such a priceless gift.

"The genius of life is being able to take childhood into old age."

George Burns

Peace and Blessings!
