A picture can shift atoms...

The unconscious mind speaks the language of symbol and metaphor, however it’s easy to forget this simple fact when we are facing adversity. Every situation is encrypted with a symbolic vocabulary that can be understood on a deeper level and used to bring our lives into the flow – the dance of life. And when we are able to use this form of communication to speak directly to our unconscious, something quite magical starts to happen: we transform the limitations and objections that sit below our normal level of awareness. We literally shift atoms and write new meanings across the realm of time and form. The world around us changes and we discover that what surrounds us is the same as what’s inside us. The difference we perceive is, in reality, just a trick of the light.

A very good friend of my wife, Esther, beautifully demonstrated this simple but profound fact very recently. I wanted to share this story with you. It’s a few paragraphs, but I feel you will find it well worth the time. 

With the permission and approval of all concerned, the story goes like this….

Esther and I were just leaving for to go on a shamanic retreat with a very powerful Shaman that we had heard many wonderful things about. In fact my own teacher had worked with this Shaman and gave testament to the strength and beauty of his work. A very significant – and unusual - aspect of the retreat was to create art to assist the integration of our experiences. As we both shared a passion for creating art, this was something we were very excited about.

During the week leading up to the retreat we had both followed a specific diet and paid careful attention to our dreams and the ‘symbols’ that appeared in our daily lives. We had also been asked to refrain from technology i.e. computers and mobile phones for two days before the retreat. Both of us understood that we would need to call upon our inner strength and courage to fully connect with the shamanic journey which lay ahead.

However my careful preparations were somewhat disturbed when my mobile phone started ringing deep inside my bag as I opened the front door to leave. I had only packed it to call for a taxi after the retreat had finished…and I’d diligently turned it off two day ago. The only thing I could think of was that something in the bag must have accidentally pushed the ‘on’ button as I lifted it up???

Determined to switch the annoying thing off I fumbled inside my bag and fished it out. However in my haste to switch it off I inadvertently pressed the wrong button and accepted the call on speaker. To my further dismay the voice of my wife’s friend, Michelle echoed from the tiny speaker. Now I have a very deep affection for Michelle, she’s one of the most generous and genuinely humorous people I know. However, from time to time, to put it mildly, she does have the amazing ability to create the most spectacular dramas around both men and money. The second I registered her voice I knew she wouldn’t be calling me about men…that was Esther’s department.

Another small aspect of Michelle is her ability to do the complete opposite of any advice that she goes to great lengths to obtain. It’s a running joke between us.

Anyway…the conversation went something like this:

Michelle: “Hi Davide…look I know you guys are going away and I’m really sorry to bother you but something urgent has come up and I just don’t know what to do!”

Davide: “Michelle…. I’m not supposed to take calls; we’re literally on the way out so can it possibly wait a few days?

Michelle: “This is terrible!!!!! Sue (her business partner) has just walked out of the business and taken our biggest client with her. She said that she doesn’t want to be around me any more…”

Davide: “That doesn’t sound too good on the surface, but I remember you telling me that you were not happy with the partnership either; you always said she was a little cold and unemotional. Maybe this is a fantastic opportunity for you both to prosper separately (I said staring at my watch). I’m sure when you’ve all calmed down you will be able to come to an arrangement.

Michelle: “Davide, you don’t understand, there’s no money left in my account and I was relying on this client to keep things going. Without the regular commissions from this client I can’t pay my mortgage or even buy shopping.

Staring even harder at my watch and seeing the annoyed look on Esther’s face I absolutely wasn’t in the space to go into this. But something just popped into my mind and I relayed this to her as I handed my bag to the taxi driver.

Davide: “Look, Michelle, the only thing I can suggest is that you go and buy some colourful felt pens….”

Michelle: “What????????

Davide: “Michelle, let me finish. Now every morning I like you to spend twenty minutes drawing - in whatever shape and form this may take – what the very best outcome of this situation would look like. (Sensing she was about to object) Now before you tell me I’m crazy, it doesn’t matter how you represent this: it could be abstract or literal, multi-coloured or black and white - it doesn’t matter. The important thing is to stop thinking and just let your hands create something filled with the symbols that represent what you want. If necessary play some beautiful music to assist you, but make sure that you do this every day – create in pictorial form what you want to happen and just notice what happens every day. See what changes in the shapes and colours and forms…Oh and one last thing, hang them up where you can see them during the day….

Michelle: (sounding more than confused) “…. yeah…Ok thanks, Davide. I can’t see how this will make any difference…but….well…yeah…”

I hung up also feeling a bit confused by the advice I’d just given Michelle. Esther looked at me and we were both thinking the same thing: it doesn’t matter she won’t do it anyway.

Creating Yourself - Consciousness Defines Being

There is a difference between what you are and what you are being. What you are is uncreated. You are consciousness, spirit and pure awareness. Consciousness is not created, consciousness simply is. It is undefined and formless. If consciousness is anything, it is love and it is self aware. But consciousness decided to express itself because love needs expression. Therefore the formless decided to take on form. That is how you who’re originally nonbeing came into being. Consciousness defines being.
 
Your true self is uncreated because it is pure spirit but you as your true self created yourself as a form and an expression. It is your expressed self that is created by your original self. Your unique individual personality and identity came into being as an expression and emanation of who you are as spirit. Spirit or consciousness can be anything and it has complete free expression of itself. Your individual personality and identify is not fixed unless you choose it to be so. You are free to change your being.
 
You create your reality and everything in it at every moment including your being. The outer world is a reflection of your inner world. All that you experience in the moment is a reflection of what you are being in the moment. If you change your being, you change your experience. In the mirror of the external world, we get to see the image of ourselves in expression. You are constantly creating yourself, and if you don’t like what you see in the mirror, you have all the power to change it by creating yourself anew.
 
Wealth is a state of being. In order to experience abundance on the outside, you must recognize the abundance on the inside. External riches is an expression of inner beliefs about riches. The thoughts that you have about material things and affluence manifest in your world exactly as you have thought them to be. If your thoughts about riches are incomplete and ungodly, then you will manifest incomplete and ungodly riches. But if your thoughts are perfect and godly, then you’ll manifest equivalent riches.
 
Power, confidence, happiness and genius are states of being which are also states of mind. You may be powerful, confident, happy and witty at one time but then you don’t find yourself that way at another time. If you get confused about why you’re not consistently the way you think you are, you will cause your sense of self to be shaken. How you are is created in every moment. It is your consciousness that defines your state of being in every moment. Knowing this allows you choose how you are.
 
To be or not to be, that is the question. Just because you are a certain way sometimes doesn’t mean you’ll always be that way every time. No one is without a choice regarding the way they are. We all choose our being. How we are doesn’t have to remain the same all the time. It is a decision we make and will always make in every moment that we are in, and every moment after that comes. In every situation you get to choose how you want to be. So be in control of yourself by choosing your being.
 
Expand your consciousness to expand your being. Who you are is much bigger than you might realize. The real you is all there is. You are the entire universe and everything in it. Your awareness of what you are is confined to a certain portion of who you are because you chose to experience every other part of you through one particular part of you. But the more you expand your consciousness of what you are, the more you are able to become and the greater expression you’ll have for yourself.
 
The more unlimited your consciousness is, the more unlimited your being is. You can be, do and have anything you want. All you need is the consciousness for it. Your beliefs define what you are, what you can do, and what you can have. What you truly are is undefined because it already is everything. So you chose to experience a portion of yourself by defining what you are as that portion. That portion of what you are is on its way to experiencing more and more of the unlimited reality of being that it is.
 
All that we are is the sum of our thoughts. Man is what he thinks all day long. If you want to know how you will be like in the future, look at all the thoughts you have been thinking all along. We will continue to remain the way we are until we change our thinking. If you choose your dominant thoughts to be positive, you will create your dominant state of being to be positive. If your thoughts are constantly evolving, you are constantly evolving and you will find your reality constantly evolving to a higher one.
 
Nothing you experience is ever truly external. It is all a reflection of your state of being. Look at what you see and realize that you are that which you see. What you see is not apart of you but it is a part of you. If you change your being, you change what your experience. The whole world is within you because the whole world is you. Your consciousness defines the world that you are. Transform your consciousness and you will transform your world. You create yourself in every moment with consciousness.
